ProtoCessor ASP

Cost-effective solution

Modbus, BACnet, Ethernet IP ProtoCessor

The ProtoCessor ASP (Application Specific ProtoCessor) is the best solution for high-volume/cost-sensitive applications that require quick protocol support. The ProtoCessor ASP 485 is hard-coded with the configuration but with the use of DIP switches the manufacturer can select from multiple hard-coded solutions.

The ProtoCessor ASP is designed for ease of installation and support by the OEM and their customers. The DIP switches provide the OEM's with plug-and-play solutions. There is no software required to download to the ProtoCessor on the various protocol networks. The OEM puts a ProtoCessor Serial TTL socket footprint on their PCB hardware and they have access to FieldServer Technologies' extensive library of protocols, providing them with a more complete solution and greater flexibility not found anywhere else.

Key Features

This module has two key features that allow the OEM the flexibility they need in a cost-effective package, DIP switches and Expansion I/O interface.

Two banks of DIP switches enable the OEM to quickly configure the serial protocol settings without the need for any third party software. Settings available via the DIP switches include:

  • MAC address
  • Baud rate (including auto-baud setting for BACnet MSTP)
  • Node ID
  • Plus, 4 special functions selectable to the OEM that can be either protocol or device related. For example, the same ProtoCessor ASP can be used on four different chiller models and the DIP switches can be used to select the specific profile used on a specific chiller model

The optional Expansion I/O Interface is a 20-pin expansion socket that includes:

  • Twelve general purpose I/O pins that can support any combination of 12 digital I/O or analog inputs
  • Eight power pins (four ground and four 3.3V pins) can be used to power an external device such as LEDs
  • Access to the 20 pins can be either a 20-pin socket or pin header on the OEM hardware or use an available ribbon cable

ProtoCessor ASP modules are factory pre-programmed allowing easy plug-and-play end-user installation.

The ProtoCessor FFP (Full Function ProtoCessor) provides the manufacturer the ability to fully configure the module via a downloadable file or by a host PC via the PCP driver. The ProtoCessor FFP includes a variety of features that results in greater flexibility for the manufacturer making it a better solution for lower volume applications where the manufacturer needs to make more modifications to specific products or groups of products.

Typical Applications for ProtoCessor ASP

Application

ProtoCessor Solution

  • A low cost, high-volume power meter manufacturer with no serial host protocol needed BACnet MS/TP and Modbus RTU support to penetrate new markets

Implement the ProtoCessor TTL socket on the OEM hardware and the ProtoCessor Simple Protocol driver

  • A high-volume HVAC rooftop company with Modbus RTU capability as the serial host needed BACnet MS/TP and Metasys N2 protocol support. They have four different chillers with slightly different profiles

Implement a serial TTL ProtoCessor socken and access the FST BACnet MS/TP and Modbus RTU protocols. Utilizing four special functions on the DIP switches, they can implement the same ProtoCessor solution in each chiller and simply use the DIP switch to select the specific model.

  • A manufacturer of convenience and grocery store coolers needed to be able to connect their systems to various energy management systems. They needed BACnet MS/TP and Modbus RTU support and the ability to connect some digital temperature sensors into the energy management system.

Implement a ProtoCessor socket and using their proprietary serial host protocol that was included on their ProtoCessor along with the FST BACnet MS/TP and Modbus RTU. They attached four temperature sensors to a ribbon cable that was connected to the ProtoCessor ASP expansion slot.
